Sangerville, Post Township, Piscataquis County Maine, 77 North West Augusta, 672 W. Situated on the height of land between Penobscot and Kennebec Rivers. Incorporated in 1814. The surface is uneven; soil, fertile. It has a pond, the outlet of which forms a head stream of Sebasticook River. It has 4 tanneries, 11 schools. 510 scholars. Pop. 1,197. Piscataquis, County, Maine. Situated in the north part of the state, extending to the Canada line, contains a great amount of territory, most of which is a wilderness, the south part only being settled. It contains a great number of lakes, the principal of which are Moose Head, on its west border, Chesuncook, and Pemadumcook. Drained by the Penobscot, Piscataquis, Sebec, and Pleasant rivers, which afford extensive water power. It contains Katahdin Mountain and some other less elevated summits. Organized in 1838. It has much good land in the neighborhood of Piscataquis River. Capital, Dover. There were in 1840, neat cattle 8,642, sheep 17,830, swine 4,720; wheat 59,298 bush, produced, rye 2,769, Indian corn 12,533, buckwheat 987, barley 4,229, oats 57,675, potatoes 445,576, sugar 8,454 pounds; 10 stores, capitol 815,400; 3 fulling mill, 1 woolen factory 9 tanneries, 3 flouring mills, 19 grist mills, 31 saw mills, 1 oil mill, 2 printing offices, 2 weekly newspapers. Capitol in manufac. $34,450. 1 academy 100 students, 143 schools. 5,578 scholars. Pop. 13,133.  Complete Descriptive and Statistical Gazetteer of the United States
